Family Governance

We advised the patriarch of a significant family who was concerned about the family businesses, his maturing children and the roles and responsibilities that each would take in the future. The family had many professional advisors around them but couldn’t get clarity on the matters most important to them. MDR Mayfair engaged extensively with all members of the family to create a Family Charter – the ‘rule book’ which sets out their expectations of one another, how they will resolve any future disputes, and how the family’s legacy will continue to be passed down through the generations.

Family office

We were asked to advise a single, recently wealthy client on  how to structure his wealth to protect it for the future. Working with tax lawyers we recommended and established an offshore private trust structure and provided Trustee services to the Board of his wealth structure. After the client experienced a series of unanticipated attacks to his safety, reputation and assets, we coordinated tax, immigration and litigation lawyers to swiftly undertake a complete restructuring of his affairs in a single week, in order to safeguard his assets.

Middle Eastern Family

We advised a multi-generation family from the Middle East on their UK and European assets and holding structures, and the transfer of those assets to a trust after a change in legislation. On being instructed it transpired that the family had 10 days prior to the end of the tax year to re-structure their UK estate. We established a new Private Trust structure for them and ensured that the assets were settled onto the new trust within the extremely tight deadline. MdR Mayfair now advises the family on all matters relating to family governance.

Listing of a family-owned business

Working with the existing advisor to a family-owned business, we advised the family on the listing of the business. On engaging a tax lawyer, we recommended that an offshore trust was the optimal vehicle in which to settle the family’s shares in the business and assisted with the establishment of the trust structure. We instructed offshore intermediary service providers to ensure compliance with local law and worked with them to ensure that the structure reflected the wishes of the family. Following the listing, we established a family office for the family and, on the eldest son getting married, engaged lawyers to arrange a pre-nuptial agreement for him.
